Wilpattu National Park: The Land of Lakes

Wilpattu National Park is Sri Lanka's largest and one of the oldest parks, renowned for its serene safari experience and the presence of nearly 60 natural, rain-filled lakes called 'Villus.' This unique landscape draws wildlife to predictable spots, especially during the dry season.

Key Wildlife Highlights

Wilpattu is an excellent place to see Sri Lanka's "Big Three" predators:
Sri Lankan Leopard:
Though spread out in the large park, sightings are very strong, and the low tourist traffic means your encounter is often more private than in other parks.
Sri Lankan Sloth Bear:
Considered one of the best parks to see this rare predator, especially during the Palu fruit season (May–July).
Asian Elephant:
Often sighted around the 'Villus,' particularly during the drier months.

Other Common Sightings: Spotted Deer, Sambar Deer, Mugger Crocodiles, Jackals, Wild Boar, and diverse birdlife (including migratory water birds).

The main entrance (Hunuwilgama) is located on the northwestern coast, making the journey directly from Colombo comfortable on paved roads.
